The microstructural evolution of AZ63 alloy without refining and refined with 1.2% MgCO3 was observed during partial remelting
and its mechanism was analyzed. The results show that both of AZ63 alloys without refining and refined with 1.2% MgCO3 can obtain desirable semi-solid microstructure. The spheroidization rate of AZ63 alloy refined with MgCO3 is increased
which is attributed to the different distribution of β phase in the as-cast microstructure after and before refining treatment. The dendritic arms of specimens without refining become relatively developed
and the area of crystal boundary is comparatively larger
meanwhile
the β phase is more dispersive and almost disappeared in the microstructure with the specimens at eutectic temperature
leading to mergence and growth of adjacent crystal.
