%)alloy were prepared by melting and casting method.Melting point of the second phase in the alloy was measured
and the isothermal oxidation experiment was carried out.The as-cast microstructure and the oxide film of the alloy were observed.The results reveal that the addition of trace rare earth elements cannot increase the melting point ofβ-Mg

phase
however the high temperature melting point phases of Al
2
Y
Al
2
Gd and Al
2
Nd are generated in the matrix
which eliminate theβphase to some extent and improve the high temperature oxidation resistance of AZ80magnesium alloy.Moreover the addition of rare earth elements can improve the oxidation film formation of the alloy and promote the densification of the oxide layer.
