/Al composites are damaged to form notches and crack as structural assemblies

taking laminated braided C

f

/Al composites as the research object

the effects of V-shaped and rectangular notches on the mechanical properties of the composites were analyzed. The results indicate that the tensile strength of the laminated braided C

f

/Al composite is 553.5 MPa and the elastic modulus is 91.5 GPa with the rectangular notch

which are 17.4% and 2.9% lower than those of the unnotched ones. After setting the V-shaped notch with the root fillet of R=0.3 mm

the tensile strength is 545.0 MPa

which is 18.6% lower than that of the unnotched ones

and the elastic modulus is 110.2 GPa

which is 17.0% higher than that of the unnotched ones. After setting the V-notch with root fillet R=0.6 mm

the tensile strength is 663.0 MPa

which is 1.0% lower than that of the unnotched ones

and the elastic modulus is 106.5 GPa

which is 13.1% higher than that of the unnotched ones. As the root fillet of the V-notch is increased from R=0.3 mm to R=0.6 mm

the notch strength ratio is increased from 0.81 to 0.99

where the tensile strength of the laminated braided C

f

/Al composite is increased and the elastic modulus has little change. Combined with the fracture morphology

the composites are characterized by brittle fracture

and mechanism of warp fracture is dominated by the fiber axial failure caused by the combination of matrix cracking

fiber pullout and interfacial debonding.
