Due to the large element segregation and low thermal conductivity in cast low alloy steel
serious cracks is easily formed. In order to eliminated the defects of hot crack and shrinkage porosity
ProCAST software was used to simulate the solidification process. The pouring system was modified and verified to eliminate the defects. The results indicate that the lower Niyama value and longer solidification duration are prone to form shrinkage cavity and crack defects. Therefore
the casting defect location can be determined accurately by combination of solidification time and Niyama criterion.
