mechanical properties and anti-seizure properties of Al-Cu-Mg alloy with low melting point component Bi were investigated. The phase composition of the alloy was observed by XRD
and the microstructure
fracture morphology and wear surface of the alloy were observed by SEM and EDS. The results reveal that with the Bi addition of 2%
the distribution of spherical Bi-rich phase appears in the alloy
which is basically composed of Mg

with small size. However
the core/shell structure with Mg

core and Bi shell was observed at Bi-rich phase particles with large size. The tensile strength
elongation and hardness of the alloy are decreased by 10%
21% and 8.5%
respectively
after adding 2.6%Bi
indicating that Bi has a certain weakening effect on the mechanical properties of the alloy. Friction and wear experiments expound that the anti-seizure ability of the alloy is greatly improved after adding Bi
where the load bearing capacity is increased from 1 700 N to 5 500 N. Moreover
the banded Bi-rich phase is smeared on the worn surface
playing a role of self-lubrication.
