The self-developed casting simulation software EasyCast and the NovaCast software were used to simulate the low-pressure casting process of magnesium alloy partition. It was found that the solidification process of plate castings didn’t follow the principle of sequential solidification
and there existed shrinkage cavity. The process was improved by adding chiller. Before and after the improvement
the solidification temperature field predicted by the two software were basically the same. Although the size of the shrinkage cavity predicted was slightly different
the position of shrinkage cavity was roughly the same. It shows that the simulation conclusion is reliable. As a result
most of the casting thickness is prone to shrinkage cavity and porosity. Through setting chiller
the effect of shrinkage can be enhanced and shrinkage cavity can be improved.
