The rapid failure of the injection plunger from a DM3500 die casting machine has been analyzed which was resulted from insufficient stiffness of injection mechanism.Variable density topology based on SIMP has been applied to optimize the stationary platen in the injection mechanism.At first the mechanical model has been set up to calculate strength and stiffness of the injection mechanism using FEM under different working conditions.Secondly the optimization model has been built to optimize topology.The final optimization of the stationary platen has been proposed according to the unit density contour from the calculation.The comparison between optimization and original design shows that the stiffness of injection mechanism is improved by 35.6%
which can reduce the rapid failure of the plunger significantly.In addition
