The Al-3 Nb-3 B master alloy was fabricated by an in-situ reaction from Al melt and Nb +KBF4 powders.The microstructure of Al-3 Nb-3 B master alloy and its grain refining effect on pure Mg were investigated.Experimental results show that the NbB2 with average particle size of 0.3μm and AlB2 with average particle size of 2μm can be observed in Al-3 Nb-3 Bmaster alloy.Both NbB2 and AlB2 particles can be acted as the nuclei site effectively
resulting in the grains refinement in pure Mg.With increasing in Al-3 Nb-3 B master alloy addition
the grain size of pure Mg can be further decreased.With0.3% Al-3 Nb-3 B master alloy addition
the average grain size of pure Mg reaches 280μm
decreased by91.5% compared with those of the unrefined pure Mg.
