Mechanical properties and fracture morphology of the as-cast and heat treated(HPDC)vacuum die casting AT72 magnesium alloy were measured and analyzed
and they were compared with those of AZ91 Dalloy. The results reveal that heat treatments can not exhibit a desirable strengthening effects on the AT72 alloy
and the fracture mode of the HPDC and T5 treated AT72alloy is mainly characterized by intergranular cleavage fracture
while the fracture mode of the T4 and T6treated AT72 alloy is mainly characterized by trans-granular cleavage mode
and most of heart cracks are propagated across shrinkages and holes besides the superficial shell for all AT72 alloys.
