The leakage of GW4D20 aluminum engine cylinder head was analyzed by air tightness testing
and the microstructure and defect at the leakage position were analyzed by optical microscopy and macroanalysis.The results show that leakage of cylinder head is attributed to the occurrence of shrinkage porosity(holes).The volatile gas out of sand core during casting process and oxide inclusion in liquid aluminum can enhance shrinkage porosities(holes)tendency in the cylinder head castings.Based on the analysis
the corresponding measures for casting defects caused were given
effectively controlling generation of the shrinkage porosities(holes)and oxide film
reducing the leakage possibility of the cylinder head.
