A comprehensive study on investment casting with cold shell moid has been carried out. The results show that pouring in the cold shell mold has the advantage of preventing decarburization at the surface of both plain and low alloy carbon steels
and therefore the positive effect of increasing the surface hardness of castings. This method can also minimize or prevent the chemical burn-on defect of steel castings. In present study the temperature distribution in the shell after pouring has been measured
the regularity of temperature and internal stress changes in the cold shell as well as their effect on the mold strength have been analysed. The mechanism of chemical burn on defect of steel castings is there after investigated.
