Abstract
The as-cast structure of the high-aluminium zinc foundry alloy ZA27 can be refined by addition of rare earth metal-cerium with the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy improved. Cerium exists mainly in solid solution in the alloy for small cerium additions (0.1%). While the compound Ce2Zn17 can be observed in the alloy for about 1 % cerium addition. For the grain refinement of the zinc alloy by cerium
remelting and breaking-off of the dendrite branches caused by constitutional undercooling seem to play impotant role.
