The microstructures of working brass with high zinc content up to 50 percent or more in weight have been changed from the inherent structure （α+β） into β phase or （β+γ）

The γ phase

a hard and brittle electron compound

is distributed onto grain boundary of β phase with cellular structure and within β phase grain with coarse star flower like in as cast condition in connection with the detrimental effect occurs during pressure working. A modification technique has been used to change the form

size and distribution of γ phase in the brass with two phases （β+γ）

so that the workability and usability of the brass have been significantly improved. Meanwhile

the hardness and volume fraction of γ phase have also been remarkably decreased by modification.
