Abstract
ZL101 alloy ingot has been prepared successfully in semi-solid forming by different techniques. Effects of solidification and cooling conditions on microstructure of the alloy were investigated. Morphology and size of the microstructure in semi-solid forming were quantitatively examined by shape factor and equivalent diameter of primary α phase and the measured data were listed. The results showed that the primary α phase can be well granulated and fined by appropriate chilling or properly vibrating at pouring temperatures 620 ℃ and 640 ℃. The ideal microstructures of the alloy in semi-solid forming can be realized in sand mould or thin-walled metal mould.
