As-cast and heat treated microstructures and properties of AZ91 Mg alloy in gravity LFC were systemically investigated. As-cast microstructure of the alloy in LFC is mainly composed of primary α-Mg dendrite and divorced eutectic β-Mg 17 Al 12 as well as a new phase Al 32 Mn 25 that was not found in other technologies( linear dimension 5~50 μm). The mechanical properties of as-cast AZ91 Mg alloy in LFC were higher than those in resin-bonded sand casting due to chilling and cushioning effects of foam pattern during mold filling in LFC. Heat treated comprehensive mechanical properties were improved remarkably. The elements diffusion rate slowed down during homogeoization.
