A searler viscometer for semi-sold metal has been developed based on the measurement principle of co-axial cylinder rotating.Measuring precision of the viscometer can be verified by measuring viscosity of the glycerin. The measured values are identical with the data from the literature at three different temperatures. The rheological behavior of the semi-solid A356 aluminum alloy slurry was examined by the viscometer. The results shows that the apparent viscosity of A356 aluminum alloy in steady-state decrease with the increase of the shear rate under isothermal shearing condition. The lower the temperature of the slurry is
the more obvious the pseudo-plasticity is.The slurry exhibits Newtonian manner at high shear rate with lower than 10% solid volume fraction.During the continuous shearing at a constant shear rate
the apparent viscosity gradually increase at begin
then sharply increase with temperature decrease. The cooling rate has a remarkable effect on the apparent viscosity of the semi-solid alloy slurry.
