We have developed a thixoforming pilot-plant-scale equipment to perform semi-solid thixoforming for pump lid using A357 alloy and a new developed Al-6Si-2Mg alloy.The microstructure and mechanical properties of the two alloys were compared during the process of SSM billets preparation
reheating and semi-solid die casting.It was revealed that the Al-6Si-2Mg alloy exhibits better processing controllability during thixoforming compared with the A357 alloy.The properties of heat treated components by semi-solid thixoforming is tensile strength of 335 MPa
yield strength of 305 MPa and elongation of 3%[WT]
higher than A357 alloy in strength
equal to A357 alloy in elongation.Finally
auto parts produced by semi-solid die casting with ideal filling
excellent properties and uniform microstructure were achieved.
