We have developed a multi-function directional solidification apparatus with a rectangular cold crucible to conduct the continuously directional solidificationof titanium alloy slabs to examine the effects of processing variables on shaping ability of Ti alloy slabs. The results show that the surface quality of the ingot can be improved with increasing in coil turns and input power while it becomes deteriorated with raising the drawing velocity and lowering the relative position of pedestal to the induction coils. The influential order among the investigated processing variables on surface quality is found to be: the first one is the induction coils
then the input power
the drawing velocity
and the pedestal position. By controlling the appropriate technological parameters
the rectangular slabs free from cracks and ripples can be obtained.
