The impact toughness of modified and non-modified hypereutectic Al-20%Si alloys were studied in the different content of P and RE. The results show that the complex modification of P and RE can obviously improve impact toughness of hypereutectic Al-20%Si alloy. When the tested alloys modified with 0.08%P and 0.6%RE
the optimal impact toughness of modified alloys is obtained. The impact toughness is increased to 11.0098J/cm2 from 9.786 2 J/cm2 of the unmodified alloy
increased by 12.5%.With the toughness fracture
the mechanism of impact fracture is mainly the brittleness fracture. It can be attributed to the the refinement of primary silicon and eutectic silicon particles and the increase of strength and ductibility of alloys caused by the complex modification of P and Re.
