The microstructure and micro-hardness of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr magnesium alloy homogenized at different temperatures for different times were investigated by means of metallography analysis and micro-hardness measurement. The results indicate that the hot working performance of the magnesium alloy can be greatly improved as result of the elimination of bulk intermetallic compounds distributed along the grain boundary after homogenizing treatment after homogenizing treatment
in which the homogenizing process strictly depends on the temperature. The optimized microstructure and micro-hardness of as-cast magnesium alloy can be observed by homogenizing treatment at 510 ℃ for 12 h.
