15 and 20 m/s and different compositions on the microstructure and magnetostrictive properties of Fe-Ga alloy prepared by melt-spun method have been examined. The results reveal that the microstructure and magnetostrictive properties of the alloys are closely related to the composition and cooling rate during melt-spun process. The maximum magnetostrictive properties of Fe83Ga17 reaching up to 6.5×10-5 can be obtained with a cooling rate of 12 m/s. The X-ray diffraction indicates that the microstructures of all alloy ribbons are composed of Fe solid solution. The ribbon observation reveals that the crystal along thick direction of ribbons exhibits orientation to some extent. The magnetostriction of the ribbons is related to the high lattice distortion and shape anisotropy.
