Microstructural evolution of ZA84 magnesium alloy during semi-solid isothermal heat treatment has been observed by SEM (scanning electron microscope) and OM (optical microscope). It is revealed that it is possible for preparing ZA84 magnesium alloy with non-dendrite structure by semi-solid isothermal heat treatment. After treated at 570 ℃ for 120 min
the non-dendrite structure with 22% liquid phase and un-melted primary solid phase with average size in 57 μm can be observed in the ZA84 alloy. Furthermore
the microstructural evolution of ZA84 magnesium alloy during semi-solid isothermal heat treatment exhibits coarse in beginning
then phase separation and shperoidization
and the final coarsening of spheriodized grain is absent.
