Gd and Ca on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ81 magnesium alloy were investigated by microstructural observation and testing. The results indicate that additions of Y
Gd and Ca element can distinctly refine the grain size in microstructure of AZ81 magnesium alloy
resulting in the reduction of β(Mg17Al12) phase and the precipitation of acicular and granular Al2Y phase Al2Ca phase. With increasing in addition of the elements
tensile strength and elongation of the aged magnesium alloy are firstly increased and then decreased at 20
1
75 ℃.The desirable tensile strengths of the alloy at room temperature and at 175 ℃ reach 230 MPa and 160 MPa
respectively
with the total Y
Gd and Ca addition of 2.1%
which is attributed to grain refining strengthening
solution strengthening and dispersion strengthening by Y
