SiCp particulate with 51.5% volumetric fraction reinforced Mg-6Al-0.5Mn composites was prepared by an squeezed-infiltration method.Effects of high volumetric fraction SiC particulate reinforcement on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg-6Al-0.5Mn alloy were investigated by compressive testing
scanning electron microscope(SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM).It was found that compressive strength of the composites at room temperature can be greatly increased from 929.5 MPa to 624.8 MPa with addition of 51.5% SiC particle.The compactive microstructure with uniformly distributed SiCp particle can by observed in the composites
and the fracture mechanism is characterized by the boundary separation
ductile fracture of the matrix alloy and reinforcement crack.In addition
nano-Mg2Si phase can be observed in the microstructure as a result of boundary reaction of SiC particle with matrix alloy.
