The microstructure of joint in TIG welded die casting AM60B magnesium alloy plates was observed. The results indicate that the fusion zone (FZ) consists of uniform fine equiaxed grain and network high density eutectic Mg17Al12 phase distributed along grain boundary
and there exist small spherical gas holes distributed nearby surface. Gas hole with different sizes and shrinkage porosity can be observed in the partially melted zone (PMZ) nearby the FZ
and microstructure is composed of coarse equiaxed grain and decreasingly Mg17Al12 eutectic phase with worm or particle shape along grain boundary. The microstructure of PMZ nearby the heat-affected zone(HAZ) exhibits coarse structure and the disappearance of grain boundary with Mg17Al12 eutectic phase. In addition
microstructure of HAZ is similar to that of matrix materials
however
the coarseness of grain size can be presented.
