Effects of solid solution treatment on semi-solid microstructure of AM60B magnesium alloy were investigated by OM (optical microscope)
XRD (X-ray diffraction). The results show that semi-solid structure with fine and uniform spherical primary phase can be observed in AM60B magnesium alloy billets which were treated for 16 hours at 415℃ and then partially remelted at 610℃. The β-Mg17Al12 phase is completely dissolved in the α-Mg matrix with solid solution treatment for 16 hours at 415℃. Remelting of coarsened dendrite from solid solution treatment results in the separation of structure in the semi-solid alloy with isothermal treatment at 610℃
which is responsible for the formation of desirable semi-solid slurry structure.
