Effects of Temperature on the Ageing Behavior of Mullite/Al-3.5Cu Composite
Short mullite fibre reinforced Al 3.5Cu composite and its base alloy were prepared in squeezing casting. Effects of temperature on the ageing behavior of the composite and its base alloy were studied by means of hardness measurement(HB)
differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and transmission electron microscope(TEM). The results showed that both the composite and the base alloy have the similar ageing hardening curves and the same precipitation sequence: the higher ageing temperature is responsible for lower peak hardness and faster ageing precipitation progress. Short mullite fibre not only increase the aged hardness of Al 3.5Cu alloy but also accelerate the ageing precipitation. It is also found that the GP zone formation is greatly suppressed by short mullite fibre while the precipitation of θ(Al 2Cu) is nearly unchanged .
