    Abstract

    A type of Mg-Al-C master alloy for grain refinement on Mg-Al based alloys was fabricated by a special powder metallurgy method. In the master alloy, Al(C) solid solution is located at the boundaries of magnesium particles. Grain refinement experiments reveal that the master alloy can refine AZ31 (Mg-3%Al-1%Zn) efficiently. With addition of 3wt.% Mg-Al-C master alloy, the grain size of AZ31 was decreased from 850 μm to 260 μm. The mechanism on grain refinement of AZ31 magnesium alloy by the Mg-Al-C master alloy was discussed.
