Abstract

In this study, a novel Al-Si-P master alloy has been successfully prepared to modify and refine primary Si in eutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. Since Si has similar crystal structures and lattice parameters with AlP, it can control the distribution of AlP in Al-Si-P master alloy. With addition of Al-Si-P master alloy, AlP particles pre-formed in Al-Si-P master alloy can nucleate primary Si which contribute to the precipitation and refinement of primary Si in eutectic and hypereutectic Al-Si alloys respectively. Forthermore, Al-Si-P master alloy has the advantages of stable and long-term modification efficiency, simple operation, no pollution to environment and low comprehensive cost, and can be used widely in the aluminum industry.
