Abstract

Mg65Cu22Ni3Y10-xNdx bulk amorphous alloys with x of 0,2,4,5,6,8 were successfully prepared by the wedge-shaped copper mold method. Effects of Nd on glass forming ability (GFA) and thermal stability of Mg65Cu22Ni3Y10 bulk amorphous alloy have been investigated by XRD and DSC. The experimental results reveal that 2% or 4% Nd addition (atom) can improve both glass forming ability and thermal stability of the alloy, with 2% Nd addition, the highest undercooled liquid region (61.5K) and thermal stability are observed. With 5% Nd addition, although the narrowest under-cooled liquid region occurs in the alloy, the best GFA such as approximately temperature of 0.568 and critical thickness, such as 3.8 mm, can be observed. However, with the Nd addition more than 5%, the GFA of the alloy is declined.
