Effects of Erbium Addition on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of As-cast Mg-Al-Zn-Mn Magnesium Alloys
Mg-9.0Al-0.8Zn-0.15Mn magnesium alloy with different erbium contents was prepared by ingot metallurgy.The effects of erbium additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction
optical microscope
scanning electron microscope and tensile testing.The results reveal that the microstructures of the alloy with different erbium additions are mainly composed of α-Mg phase
Mg17Al12 phase and Al3Er.Meanwhile
the grain size can be refined from 57 μm to 21 μm.In addition
the ambient tensile properties of the alloy can be improved obviously as a result of the improvement of morphology and distribution of Mg17Al12 phase in the alloy.
