Effects of Gd on Microstructure and Properties of As-cast AZ31 Magnesium Alloy
Effects of RE element Gd on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast AZ31 magnesium alloy were investigated.The results reveal that microstructure of the as-cast AZ31 magnesium alloy can be refined with Gd addition
resulting in the decrease of Mg17Al12 phase and occurrence of particle or polygonal Al2Gd phase.With 0.8% Gd addition
average grain size of the alloy is refined from approximately 290 μm to 140 μm
and tensile strength and elongation are improved to 210 MPa and by 18.3%
