Microstructure and Grain Refining Efficiency of Al-5Ti-1B Grain Refiner Produced by Electromagnetic Stirring and Castex Process
The Al-5Ti-1B master alloy was produced by electromagnetic stirring and castex process.Microstructure and grain refinement efficiency of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy were investigated by ICP
OM(optical microscope)
XRD(X-ray diffraction) and SEM(scanning electron microscope)
and compared with that of Al-5Ti-1B alloy ingot.The results show that TiAl3 phase is refined and distribution of TiB2 particle is improved in the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy as a result of effects of electromagnetic stirring in tundish and semi-solid shearing effects as well as severe plastic deformation role during castex process
where TiAl3 phase exhibits fine block structure and TiB2 particle is dispersed into α-Al matrix.Grain refining effects on the aluminum alloy with the prepared master alloy are greatly improved.The average grain size in the pure aluminum with 0.2% Al-5Ti-1B master alloy reaches 223 μm with holding for 5 min and 316 μm with holding for 180 min.
